Cameo roles in films, variously known in India as “guest appearance”, “special appearance” or “friendly appearance” is a brief role by a known actor in a film in which he or she is not a part of the main cast. The lengths of such roles are varying in degrees of ‘short’, as well as the number of times they appear on the screen.

Some of them take you by surprise, while some others despite their short-lived screen presence make a lasting impression on the entire film, and yet others are remembered for their priceless comic timing in the briefest of appearances.

02. Kalpana as Kottarakara Komalam in Gandharvam

Not necessarily a significant film, but Kalpana’s lovesick theatre actor ‘Kottarakara Komalam’ is singularly memorable for her comic timing and the clingy candor she exudes to only bail on time in Gandharva.

03. Philomena as Paru Ammayi in Thalayanamanthram

One might always want to stay away from this really distant and parasitic relative called 'Paru Ammayi' played by Philomena who, in the third person, is not only comical but also outright innovative with her bitchiness.

07. Jagathy Sreekumar as the guy who gulped the horse in Ulladakkam

Jagathy Sreekumar’s cracked patient lasting for less than four minutes of the film may be insignificant to the overall plot development, but the sheer eccentricity of this wacky sketch alone makes it the keynote we remember the movie with today.

08. Innocent as Yashwant Sahai in Sandham

Innocent’s insolent politico ‘Yashwant Sahai’, with his bad Hindi and a worse attitude is a caricature of snobbish men of power and is a rollicking occurrence right in the middle of one of the best political satires in Malayalam.

09. Kuthiravattam Pappu as Sulaiman in Vellanakalude Nadu

As the man who bravely managed the fabled crisis on “Thamarasserry Churam”, Kuthiravattam Pappu’s callously idiotic ‘Sulaiman’ has long entered the almanac of Malayalam puns with its catchy “ippo sheriyakkithara” topping the list.

10. Mamukkoya as Gafoor in Nadodikattu

Apart from the comical aftertaste, this character leaves on the entire film, Mamukkoya’s ‘Gafoor’ happens at the most decisive juncture in the plot, and changes the course of the narrative with a hilarious twist.

11. Kammath & Kammath

Raja Raja Kammath and Deva Raja Kammath are two brothers who owns a chain of restaurants that specializes in making Dosa. The story begins when they come to Palakkad to open a new restaurant.

Nonsense!

After Face2Face and Bavuttiyude Namathil, Mammootty disappoints yet again. Dileep isn't very endearing, but the film as a whole is a fantastic entertainer.

K&K is a terrible film that depicts the narrative of how brothers can be the worst thing that can happen to someone, with music plagiarised from different Hollywood films, cheap humour plagiarised from various Bollywood films, and stunts plagiarised from various Malayalam and/or Tamil films. The first half is dull, but when the interval bell rings, the tension builds.

12. Narasimham

16. Action Hero Biju

As per reports doing the rounds, Nivin Pauly’s Action Hero Biju will be getting a sequel. While there has been no official word on this yet, director Abrid Shine is said to be working on a second part to the original police story which stood out with its unique narrative style.

April has so far managed to make every film different from his previous one. He has worked with Nivin on two films, starting with his directorial debut in 1983, and later followed by Action Hero Biju, both of which tasted success at the box office.

His last film was the martial arts-revenge drama Kung Fu Master, whose action choreography was handled by the director himself. It was the first of its kind in Malayalam cinema.

17 . Two Countries

Story: Ullas, a carefree Malayali youth believes a person has to profit from every deed in his life. His opportunistic outlook lands him in a marriage with a wealthy Canadian citizen Laya; only to find out later that she isn’t who she seemed to be.

Srinda and Mamta have done their share in the comic department. The movie offers no surprises. It unabashedly plies on laughs upon laugh. At times, there is the feel of a skit unraveling, but Dileep's presence takes care of this.

The storyline is basically about a good-for-nothing lazy fellow, who wants to lead a rich life without working for it. In between the fraudulent money-making deeds of the hero,

He happens to marry his childhood friend Laya, who settled in Canada a long while ago. Laya's alcoholism and how they strive for a cordial relationship without first killing each other is basically what the movie is all about

20. Upacharapoorvam Gunda Jayan:

Upacharapoorvam Gunda Jayan appears to have been made with the intention of making a film having a lot of "comedy" in it. As you can see, this concept is present in nearly every scene. The difficulty with such concepts is that if the comedy falls flat, the entire movie falls apart like a house of cards.

Upacharapoorvam is an example of this. While lead actor Saiju Kurup and others such as Sabumon, Johny Antony, Shabareesh Varma, Shailaja Ambu, and a number of novices give it their all, they can't redeem the movie.

The entire premise revolves around a wedding that is set to take place in the home of 'Gunda Jayan' (Saiju Kurup), a man who was once known as a goon but has since reformed.

He owns a grocery business and has a family, yet his mannerisms and behavior show signs of his previous existence. He doesn't smile much and yells at everyone.

In the movie, the bathroom is really essential. There are scenes that lead up to it, as well as a thread that runs around it till the final scene. Only if the writing had been better would it have been intriguing.

In Malayalam movies, bathroom humor has been employed frequently, and often in poor taste. Arun Veiga, the director, and Rajesh Varma, the writer, fall into the latter category, going too far. You'd want to jump into the screen and build them a bathroom at some point.

TNM's Featured Videos

They strive to create a plot around the various things that can go wrong in a wedding preparation house. A lot of the tinkering is done on purpose. The bride, Gunda Jayan's niece, does not want to marry the guy her uncle has chosen for her. She has a relationship that no one in the family wants to talk about for unfathomable reasons.
